Building Stages Across Platforms

Building Stages Across Platforms: How New Media is Changing the Landscape of the Performing Arts is a workshop / presentation developed  by Jennifer Edwards. Building Stages highlights trends and innovations in new and social media within the context of the performing arts and seeks to inspire innovation and clear communication in the field. This workshop explores the nuts and bolts of blog writing and promotion, and pitching projects to unlikely targets. Participants will brainstorm & collaborate on-the-spot. Everyone will leave with a game plan in place. Building Stages is based on Jennifer Edwards’ work as writer/choreographer/content creator, whose work is featured on multiple media platforms, including Martha Stewart’s Whole Living Magazine and the Huffington Post.

This work was presented for the first time in May 2011 at an International University Global Theater Experience Conference entitled “Performing Arts Training Today” in Leitring bei Leibnitz, Austria.

Current points include:

  • The effects of new media and technology on the performing arts
  • The potential and possible uses of social media, blogs, vlogs, and other web platforms as extensions of art
  • How to use new and social media (platforms) to create performance spaces (stages) for your work on the web.

Building Stages also asks the questions:

  • How might this function as a conduit for reaching new and diverse audiences? Moreover how might it revitalize the leadership role of performance art makers and managers in the broader creative spectrum?
  • How can performance art organizations and institutions, who have relied on closed communities and information ownership in the past, adopt new media as a viable way of collecting and sharing information?
  • How can we use new / social media to effectively collect and preserve the history of contemporary dance, theater, and other performance art?
