Stress Reduction & Empowerment: The BARS Method™

Jennifer Edwards teaches stress reduction & empowerment using a system she developed called the BARS Method™. Private and group sessions are available for those living in the New York City metro area. Trainings and seminars are also available for upper-level management in corporations, organizations and educational institutions.

The Premise
Stress is a primal, physical response to a perceived threat. Most daily and chronic stress is triggered by the mind, and experienced in the body. Reducing stress is vitally important, as this biological stress response is a key factor in the leading causes of death including: heart disease, cancer, obesity and depression. The BARS Method™ uses applied body-mind integration techniques, practicality and common sense to help clients:
1) Understand the stress response
2) Create a daily practice that uses segments of 1-2 minutes of time – time you have, waiting for / riding the subway, a bus, an elevator, etc.
3) Develop habits that fuel the reduction of stress rather than feed the stress response
4) Apply techniques and tools to every aspect of life, life-challenge and type of stress

The BARS Method™ is effective because it uses an easy to remember acronym that reflects common feelings experienced when we are distressed: we feel trapped as though we are behind ‘bars’, we reach for a candy bar, we grab a friend and head to a bar for a drink. The BARS Method™ uses these associations to aid individuals in learning a proactive approach to stress management:

Breathe- engage the body and stimulate the parasympathetic (relaxation inducing) nervous system

Assess- in one simple sentence, state what exactly is stimulating your stress response

Release- let go of any emotional, dramatic story of ‘what if’, ‘worst case’, blame, or guilt

Strategize- see the facts, look objectively at what needs to be done, get to work

NOTE – This is a process. Coupled with stretching, self-awareness exercises, deep breathing practice and various other modalities of their  choosing- clients learn to use and apply these steps over time.

Clients have Reported Results Including:

-Increased ability to handle work place, life, school and family-related stress

-Reduced panic attacks, reduced anxiety
